Xiaomi Mijia Shoe Washer 3KG: Price, Features and Specs

Xiaomi has announced a washing machine that only takes shoes. The Mijia Shoe Washer 3KG went up for crowdfunding on Youpin in China on November 2, starting at 799 yuan (about $115). The suggested retail price is 1,299 yuan (about $185). Xiaomi hasn’t given a shipping date or said whether it will sell outside China.

Design and size

It’s white, like the rest of the Mijia line, and covers 0.18 square meters of floor. That’s small enough for a balcony or the corner of a laundry room. Xiaomi says to leave at least 50 mm of space behind it.

How it cleans

A pulsator spins the water fast enough to push it through the uppers, outsoles and linings, and brushes in the drum scrub off mud, grass and sweat stains. Xiaomi recommends 5 to 8 grams of low-foam liquid detergent or shoe-washing powder. Knock off loose mud first, or it can clog the drain.

Capacity

The drum is rated at 3 kg, which Xiaomi says fits two to four pairs depending on size. Its size guide lists three pairs of kids’ shoes (under size 25), two mid-sized pairs (25 to 30), or one adult pair up to size 43.

Washing programs

There are eight programs: Standard, Intensive, Quick, Sterilization, Multi-use, Rinse + Spin, Spin-only and Tub Clean. Quick Wash runs about 20 minutes and doesn’t need the laces removed.

Sterilization and self-cleaning

The sterilization cycle is aimed at bacteria and fungi, and Xiaomi names E. coli and Staphylococcus aureus. I couldn’t find a single confirmed kill rate, so check the Youpin page before quoting a percentage. The Tub Clean cycle flushes out sand and debris after muddy loads. The pulsator disc and filter are swappable, so you can wash pet accessories or cleaning items without cross-contaminating your regular laundry.

What not to wash

Sneakers, canvas shoes and sports sandals are fine. Xiaomi says to avoid leather, expensive pairs and anything with delicate decorations that water or brushes could damage.
