The Pro Max’s 50MP triple camera does a decent job out of the box, but if you want more control over your shots, you can sideload a Google Camera (GCam) mod. The Xiaomi 17 is the smaller, lighter one in the lineup. 6.3-inch LTPO AMOLED at 1220×2656, 120Hz, 2160Hz PWM dimming, HDR10+/HDR Vivid/Dolby Vision. Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 on 3nm, 12 or 16GB RAM, up to 1TB storage, HyperOS 3 over Android 16. Triple 50MP Leica-tuned rear cameras (wide, ultra-wide, telephoto). Battery is 6,330mAh silicon-carbon, 100W wired and 50W wireless charging, IP68 rated, roughly 151.1 x 71.8 x 8.1mm and 191g.
The 17 Pro uses the same screen and chip but tacks on a 2.7-inch secondary rear display next to the camera bump — handy for notifications, music, and using the main cameras for selfies. The real upgrade is the camera hardware: a 50MP Light Fusion 950L main sensor, a 50MP Omnivision OV50M40 ultra-wide, and a 50MP Samsung ISOCELL GN8 periscope telephoto with 5x optical zoom. Battery’s slightly smaller at 6,300mAh, same charging speeds, IP68, 192g.
Why Bother With GCam
The stock camera is genuinely good — AI selfie mode, AI Bokeh, sharp daylight shots, and low light isn’t bad either. Where it falls apart a bit is the ultra-wide lens after dark; it gets soft and loses detail fast. That’s usually where GCam earns its keep — better dynamic range, cleaner night shots, less aggressive smoothing.
