Xiaomi has added a travel mug to its Mijia line, the Mijia Titanium Thermos Cup Tea-Water Separation Edition. It holds 500ml and costs 199 yuan ($30). Crowdfunding starts on Xiaomi Youpin at 10:00 AM on October 14.

The idea is simple. A clear Tritan chamber sits on top of the flask, with a titanium filter between them. Put tea or anything else you’d steep in the chamber (Xiaomi lists green tea, black tea, oolong, lemon slices, mint, dried tangerine peel, and ginseng) and fill the flask with hot water.

To brew, flip the sealed cup upside down. The water runs through the filter into the chamber, and you can watch the color to judge the strength. When it looks right, turn the cup upright. The tea drains back into the insulated flask and the wet leaves stay behind, so the tea won’t over-steep.

Titanium makes up the body, the removable filter, and the lid lining, and Xiaomi says its purity is above 99%. That makes the cup lighter than stainless steel, and it resists corrosion without adding a metallic taste. The lid has a rounded rim for sipping.

If you don’t want to brew, unscrew the chamber and the lid fits directly onto the base, which turns it into an ordinary vacuum flask. Xiaomi says it holds around 45°C for six hours. That is a low number for a thermos, so check it against the product page before you rely on it.

The filter is removable, and the silicone seal has a pull tab for washing. The Tritan chamber is thickened, but Xiaomi says not to boil it or soak it in very hot water because it can warp. The cup comes in Deep Space Gray and Moonlight Silver.
