Both phones come from Xiaomi. Redmi is the mainstream line, and the Note 17 Pro is for people who want a sturdy phone they don’t have to think about. Poco is the cheaper, online-first sub-brand, and the X8 is for people who watch the price tag. The comparison is timely because the Poco X8 launched in India on September 4, 2026, and the Note 17 Pro went on sale there on September 17.

On paper, they’re close. The Note 17 Pro has a 6.83-inch 120Hz AMOLED screen, a 9,000mAh battery and 67W charging. The Poco X8 lists the same screen, refresh rate, battery and charging speed. Both use the Snapdragon 6s Gen 4.
The gaps are in durability and cameras. The Note 17 Pro states Gorilla Glass Victus 2, 3,500 nits of peak brightness and IP66, IP68, IP69 and IP69K ratings. The Poco X8 listing only says “dust and water resistant,” so check the exact rating before you buy. The X8 has a 50MP main camera plus a 2MP depth sensor, which makes it a one-camera phone in practice. The Note 17 Pro also has a 50MP main camera, and the global version adds an 8MP ultra-wide. I couldn’t confirm the India camera setup.
For battery life, one outlet expects one to two days of light to moderate use. That’s a guess, not a test.
In India, the Note 17 Pro starts at Rs 36,999. The Poco X8 starts at Rs 29,999, and launch offers bring that down to Rs 26,999. Elsewhere, the Note 17 Pro starts at RM1,399 in Malaysia, and a leak puts its European price at €500. The Poco X8 sells through Flipkart in India. I found no confirmed Nigerian pricing for either phone, so check local retailers. If you’re deciding between them, the real question is whether better build quality and a possibly better camera are worth Rs 7,000 to 10,000 extra, since the chip and battery are identical.
If you want more from the same brand, the Redmi Note 17 Pro Max has a 10,000mAh battery with 100W charging and starts at Rs 49,999. The Poco X8 Power also has a 10,000mAh battery and 100W charging, and it starts at Rs 35,999. The X8 Pro starts at Rs 39,999. Outside Xiaomi, the Vivo T5 and Samsung’s Galaxy A-series are worth pricing locally. I’d still start with these two, because with the chip and battery matched, the choice comes down to cost versus build and camera.
The Note 17 Pro’s full water-resistance rating and tougher glass count if your phone gets rained on or dropped. Its weakness is price, since you pay about Rs 7,000 more for the same core performance. The Poco X8’s strength is that you get the same chip, screen and battery for less. Its weaknesses are a near-useless second camera and an unclear water-resistance rating.
Choose the Redmi Note 17 Pro if build quality and camera flexibility matter most. Choose the Poco X8 if you’d rather keep the money and can live with a simpler camera.
