XiaomiBook S 12.4″ is one of those Windows tablets that keep getting made, and they keep landing in the same awkward spot. Too heavy to beat an iPad, too weak to replace a laptop, and often priced as if they could do both. The Xiaomi Book S 12.4″ doesn’t escape that completely. It does get closer than most.
The reason is the chip. It’s a detachable 2-in-1 with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8cx Gen 2, an ARM processor, rather than the Intel or AMD part in most Windows machines. ARM runs cool and sips power, so you get a thin, fanless body. You also get Windows on ARM, which has improved a lot but still has gaps. Browsers, Office, streaming and note apps are fine. Video editing, games and older x86-only software are where I’d expect trouble. If your day is mostly documents, email and too many tabs, this is fine. If it isn’t, don’t bother.
The screen is the reason to consider it. It’s 12.4 inches, 16:10, sharp, and it takes a stylus. Held upright it suits reading and marking up PDFs. In landscape it fits two windows side by side without feeling squeezed. That size is a good middle ground, small enough for a bus seat and big enough that you don’t feel like you’re working on a phone.
The keyboard is the weak spot, as it is on nearly every detachable. Short travel and a tight layout are fine for emails and tiring for anything longer. The kickstand is flexible but wobbles on a lap in a way a clamshell never does. Check how it feels for yourself before buying if you write a lot.
One thing ARM does well is idling. Instant wake and low standby drain are things plenty of regular laptops still get wrong.
So it suits students, commuters and anyone with light office work. Creators and developers with x86 toolchains should look elsewhere. It won’t replace your main laptop, and I don’t think it’s trying to. As a second device, or a first one for simple needs, it’s an easy recommendation.
