Why this Mijia Smart Air Purifier 6 review matters right now

Air quality is becoming a worry again across North India, and Diwali is close. Delhi-NCR sees pollution spike every festive season, so clean indoor air is hard to take for granted. An air purifier has stopped being a luxury for a lot of families.

More brands are noticing. Xiaomi has now launched Mijia, a smart home appliance sub-brand, in India. The Mijia Smart Air Purifier 6 is one of its first products, priced at Rs. 19,999. It’s meant for larger rooms and claims coverage of up to 940 sq ft. Is it worth buying? Here’s what I found.

Design

It’s a tall, squarish white unit with rounded corners. Nothing about it is striking, but it will sit in a corner of your living room or bedroom all day, so I didn’t mind. It’s 250mm wide and 555mm tall, which is a small footprint for something rated for a big room. At 5.2kg, you can carry it from room to room without effort.

Air comes in through perforations on the lower half of the body and leaves through the outlet at the top. The front has a circular colour screen showing indoor air quality, plus two touch buttons for power and mode. That’s all the controls there are, and I figured them out in seconds.

The filter sits behind a magnetic panel, so pulling it out for cleaning is easy.

Give it space. Since it draws air from the lower body, Xiaomi recommends at least 20cm of clearance on every side. Don’t push it against a wall or hide it behind a sofa.

Filtration

The purifier uses five stages. The primary filter catches pet hair, dust, and other large particles. The high-efficiency filter is rated to remove 99.98 percent of particles at 0.3 microns. An activated carbon layer deals with cooking smells, formaldehyde, and other VOCs. UV-C sterilisation and negative ion technology handle the rest.

It also carries ITS Allergen Free and SGS Allergen Removal certifications, which will matter if dust, pollen, or pet dander is a problem at home.

The 0.3 micron figure shows up on spec sheets because it’s a standard test size and one of the harder ones for filters to catch. PM2.5 from traffic, stubble burning, and firecrackers is small enough to reach deep into the lungs, so this is the number to check on any purifier you consider in a city like Delhi.

App and smart features

The purifier has five sensors: PM1, PM2.5, dust, temperature, and humidity. The front display gives you a quick reading, and the Xiaomi Home app shows more detail.

Setup is simple. Pair the purifier and the app connects it to your Wi-Fi automatically (2.4GHz only). Then you can set its location, check live air quality, switch each filtration function on or off, change modes, set schedules, track filter life, and look at historical air quality data over different periods.

Alexa and Google Assistant work for basic commands. They did the job, but I kept going back to the app whenever I wanted finer control.

Mijia Smart Air Purifier 6 review – Performance

Xiaomi says the purifier can clean a 108 sq ft room in about three and a half minutes under test conditions. With a CADR of 443 m³/h and the 940 sq ft claim, it’s clearly aimed at living rooms and open-plan spaces.

In my test, I lit an incense stick in an average-sized living room and let PM2.5 climb above 100. About 20 minutes later, the purifier had it down to the mid-thirties. In day-to-day use, expect an average room to be cleaned in 15 minutes or so.

Higher fan speeds work faster, but they’re loud. I found the noise more distracting than I’d like. If you want quick cleaning, run it on a high setting while nobody is in the room, then drop it down. For nights, use Sleep Mode.

Maintenance and filter costs

Upkeep is light. Wipe the outside with a damp cloth. After removing the top cover, clean the air duct and fan blades with a dry cloth. Xiaomi says to brush the filter every 30 days of use.

Each filter lasts 6 to 12 months depending on how bad the air is where you live. After a little over a month, mine showed 96 percent. A replacement costs Rs. 1,499 on Xiaomi’s website, and swapping it takes a minute: open the flap at the back and drop the new one in. By my estimate that’s roughly Rs. 1,500 to Rs. 3,000 a year.

What I can’t tell you is whether filters will still be easy to find in a few years. Owners of discontinued Xiaomi smart water purifiers have complained about exactly that. Mijia is a dedicated brand Xiaomi wants to grow in India, though, so I’d expect it to keep filters in stock. I’d still check availability before buying.

Who should buy Mijia Smart Air Purifier 6

It makes sense if you live somewhere with heavy pollution, want to protect a living room or large bedroom, and like having schedules and air quality history in an app. The filter costs are also easy to plan around.

Skip it if you need something silent at high speeds, if long-term filter supply worries you, or if you only have a small room. A cheaper purifier will do that job.

Verdict

For Mijia’s first product in India, this is a good start. The five-stage filtration, detailed monitoring, easy app, and quick purification make it a practical choice. The small body and cheap filters help too. The fan gets annoying at higher speeds, and I’m not certain about filter availability down the line.

At Rs. 19,999, it’s a solid pick if you want to clean a larger room without paying much more. It handles the pollution season well. Whether it still does in three years depends on Xiaomi keeping filters in stock.

Pros

  • Brings down indoor pollution quickly
  • Five-stage filtration and multiple air quality sensors
  • Easy app with schedules and historical data
  • Affordable replacement filters
  • Compact for its coverage

Cons

  • Fan noise at higher speeds
  • Long-term filter availability is unproven
