PROS

  1. Bright, sharp AMOLED screen at 1.85 inches and up to 1,200 nits, which is rare at this price.
  2. Solid battery life, with a realistic 12 days of normal use and about six with always-on display and full health tracking.
  3. Light and slim at 26 g and 9.9 mm, with Bluetooth calling and quick-release straps.

CONS

  1. No built-in GNSS, so outdoor runs and rides need your phone for accurate route tracking.
  2. Limited water resistance and payments. It's IP68 only, with no pool or shallow-water use, and it has no NFC, with payments only promised in a later update.

Most smartwatch spec sheets read like wish lists, and most of us end up using about four items on them. This watch looks like it was designed by someone who noticed.

The screen is the first surprise. It’s a 1.85-inch AMOLED panel at 390 x 450, and Xiaomi says it peaks at 1,200 nits, so glare shouldn’t be a problem. AMOLED on a watch this cheap still feels like a small win. It weighs 26 grams without the strap, and Xiaomi went with a flat frame and curved glass to keep it slim.

Battery life comes with three numbers, and they’re far apart. The 470mAh cell is rated for up to 18 days in battery-saver mode, about 12 in normal use, and around six with the always-on display and regular health tracking. I’d plan around the middle one. Eighteen days means turning off things you probably bought a watch for, and six is still respectable when the screen is this bright.

The daily basics are covered. You get Bluetooth 5.3 calling and more than 140 sports modes, and the straps swap out quickly. Nothing exotic, which seems to be the idea.

The gaps are where you’d expect them. Xiaomi’s spec sheet doesn’t list built-in GNSS, though the standard Redmi Watch 6 has it, so if you run without your phone, look at the bigger model. IP68 handles sweat and rain, but Xiaomi says not to wear it in pools or for shallow-water activities. Payments are the messiest part. There’s no NFC, and Xiaomi says a payment feature will come in a software update later in September instead of at launch. I’d wait to see what that means in your market before counting on it.

Xiaomi Redmi Watch 6 Active Price

In China it launched at 349 yuan, roughly $51. Leaks pointed to about EUR 50 for Europe, while a US Amazon listing showed $66.49 before launch. Expect your local price to differ.

If you want a good screen, calls on your wrist and a battery that outlasts a weekend, this does all three for little money. If you swim, run without your phone or pay with your watch, spend more. Everyone else has probably been paying for extras.
