Xiaomi doesn’t get much love in the laptop aisle, and the Xiaomi Book 14 isn’t going to fix that. It doesn’t want to be a MacBook. It wants to give you a nicer screen and more RAM than the price implies, and for the most part it does.
Start with the display, because it’s the whole pitch. 14 inches, 2880 × 1800, 16:10, up to 120Hz, full sRGB. It falls back to 60Hz when you’re just reading, so you aren’t paying for refresh rate you don’t need. It’s only 300 nits, though, so don’t plan on working next to a bright window. Indoors it’s good enough that I’d happily stare at spreadsheets on it.
The chip is the problem. Your options are a Core i5-12500H with 16GB and a 512GB SSD, or a Core i3-1220P with 8GB and 256GB. Both are 12th-gen Intel, and that generation is looking old. The i3 version is hard to recommend, since 8GB of RAM gets tight fast with a few dozen browser tabs. If you’re going to buy one, get the i5. The second SSD slot, which takes up to 1TB, helps.
I like the charger most. A 100W brick that gets you to 50% in about 35 minutes is the kind of thing I’d actually use, and it charges a phone too. I’m less sure about the dual-fan cooling. Xiaomi talks about it a lot, but I couldn’t find anything on how loud it gets under load, and that’s what I’d want to know.
One thing needs checking before you spend money. Xiaomi‘s own spec page lists the weight at 1.8kg, while other coverage says 1.37kg. Those are very different laptops to carry around, so find out which one you’re getting.
Xiaomi has since announced the Book Pro 14, with an OLED screen and newer Intel chips, and it makes the Book 14 look like the budget model it is. If you spend your day in a browser and a document editor, that’s probably fine. If you want something that still feels fast in four years, it’s probably not. I haven’t used it myself, so all of this comes from the spec sheets and other people’s reviews.
